• Veteran and Ancient Trees are the jewel in the crown of the British landscape; the UK has 80% of Europe’s Ancient trees, many of these preserved in historic landscapes.
• One of the main elements of our work in such landscapes has been to prescribe and implement measures for protecting and preserving the veteran trees within them. A significant number of Oak and Yew in this country are several hundred and sometimes more than one thousand years old, and they merit special attention.
• Common management actions are the prevention of stock damage, ‘haloing’ to remove trees around veterans which are overshading them, weight reduction of heavy stems, and the preservation of aerial and fallen deadwood.
