Nether Lypiatt Manor, Gloucestershire
In contrast to the contemporary gardens we are designing around new country houses, our work at Nether Lypiatt has involved the creation of a masterplan and a series of traditional, arts and crafts inspired gardens around a Grade I listed manor house
Nether Lypiatt is undoubtedly one of England's finest manor houses and, while its formally arranged early 18th century facades have a commanding presence over the 20 acre gardens, the place retains a strong sense of the informality that characterises the arts and crafts style.
A strong network of existing evergreen and deciduous hedges, some laid out by Lawrence Johnston of nearby Hidcote Manor, formed the backbone to our masterplan. Into this framework of spaces we introduced a series of new gardens, mindful of the history defining the character of the site, yet responsive to the needs and aspirations of a client with a young family.
Our new Flower Garden at Nether Lypiatt, with its chromatic planting, bespoke seasoned oak trellising and tailor-made glasshouse, has won a 2009 BALI Award.
